Hitch Hiker

In 2007 when I was just 17 a few friends and I decided to head north to Lake Borumba for a camping trip full of drinking and partying. Quinny and I jumped in his car and Josh and Jared went in Jared's.

On the way up we had the music pumping and there was excitement flowing through the air until we ran up the back of the car in front at about 80 km/h and careered off into the ditch on the side of the road. His car was a write-off. Luckily he knew a tow truck driver who towed it back to his house.

After being so close, but yet so far, we were determined not to let this ruin our trip. One of our friends, Dean, we were planning on meeting up there had not left yet and had two spare seats in his car, so we ended up getting a ride with him. We arrived at the camping ground at about 8pm.

The first night was pretty low key, although we got pretty drunk but nothing too exciting happened. There was seven of us who slept there. Quinny, Josh, Jared, me, Dean, and his and girlfriend and her friend.

We all woke up the next morning a little worse for wear, but there was not really much to do out there so we started drinking at about noon while playing some cricket with a little boy who was staying at a neighbouring camp site. Quinny noticed some people he went to primary school with setting up near us and they invited us to drink with them that night.

So we did, and it was pretty fun. Until ten hours of drinking caught up with me and I started to get unusually aggressive and punched a glass door for an ice box. It shattered into pieces and woke the camp managers who came out to inform me that they are calling the police. I did not like this idea and got more aggressive. They arrived and went to grab me and I pushed away and was hesitant to hope in the back of there paddy wagon. They sat me on the back of the car and I tried to get up, one of them held me down and the other one leant over and punched me on the cheekbone, it swelled instantly. Eventually they shut the doors and drove me about half an hour to the Gympie Police Station. They were flying too, defintly going over the speed limit. They took my finger-prints and asked a few questions then put me in a cell for the night.

At 5:30 the next morning they opened up the cell and walked me out to the door to leave me to my own way. With no phone or money and about an hour away from home and half an hour away from where my friends were I could only do one thing and that was to hitch-hike back to the camp site.

I started walking with my arm extended out and thumb pointing toward the sky. After walking for about 2 hours finally a truck stopped and picked me up, he took me until he had to turn off, which was not too far. So I continued to walk for another couple of hours until a couple in there forties picked me up and took me too Imbil which was the closest town to the camp-site but still a ten minute drive away.

I had no idea if my friends had left yet or if they were still at the camp-site so I waited on the side of the road for about 4 hours hopeing that they were going to drive past and see me and luckily enough they did. When I jumped in the car they told me that the little boy we played cricket with had told them that he had seen me in town. It was a long, silent trip back!

I also found our months later that Quinny slept with Deans girlfriend, so all in all it was a very eventful weekend.

I went to court a few months later charged with unwillful damage, public nuisance and something else that I cant really remember. I did not cop a conviction, and had to pay for the damage to the ice machine.

Missing Persons in Melbourne?

In Febuary 2008 my mum and I went back to our homeland, Victoria, to visit our extended family. This also gave me an oppurtunity to catch up with my primary school mate, Ryan. So on the Saturday we jumped on a train from his local station and headed to the Melbourne Casino. After losing the majority of our money on the roulette tables we decided to try our luck on the pokie machines. Ryan gave me the tip-off to try Big Red, so we both jumped on neighbouring machines and it paid dividends, both coming out with $150. After this we left, and hopped back on a train to head back to his house, with plans to head to a local nightclub, Blitz.

After a few beers, his sister dropped us off at the club, we waited about 20 minutes in line, then were scanned by security for any weapons etc. Something I had never experienced before. When we went in it was pumping, full of people and a massive dancefloor. I didn't know a soul there (other than Ryan).

The night went on and we were alternating shouts of two beers and two shots of black Sambuca everytime. This was ultimately our downfall with the night very hazy from about midnight. After locking lips with a 'kiwi hippo' (not my finest moment) I could not find Ryan anywhere, after spending a good twenty minutes looking for him I started to stress and left to go the the petrol station across the road. I knew I was in a bit of trouble since I did not know the suburb I was in and had no idea how to get to Ryan's, plus I did not have a phone or any money.

When I was at the petrol station a car pulled up in front of me with two blonde girls in it. The one in the passenger seat yelled out "do you know how to get to Cranbourne?" I had no idea but for some reason I said yes, before I knew it I was in the back seat making out with the one in the passenger seat. After a good twenty minutes of driving we pulled into this house surrounded by only paddocks, we walked in and went to the room with the girl. After doing what you do when a male and a female get together, I hear this 'bang! bang!' on the door, I look up to see this guy come bursting in with a gash across his head pouring out blood, the girl gets up and starts yelling at him and takes him out of the room.I got up and locked the door then layed there staring at the ceiling listening to things getting thrown around and a lot of yelling and swearing. Then he comes to the door again, banging and screaming for me to come out and open the door, at this stage I had en-trenched myself in between the bed and the chest of draws. I was starting to sober up a bit at this stage too, I was starting to realise the situation I was in. After about another twenty minutes the girl came in and we went to sleep.

I woke up to the sunlight peering through the window which had no curtains. I opened up the window, jumped out and walked across the paddock until I hit the dirt road. I just walked the way I thought there was any civilisation, after walking for about half an hour I found myself on the main street of Cranbourne. Back at house I stole $4 from the girl, so I used this to ring my mate up in Queensland because I remembered his number and I rang him off Ryan's phone the day before. Luckily he answered and I asked him to go through his recieved calls to get Ryan's number. I rang Ryan and his mum answered, she was real worried, she informed me that Ryan and his Dad had been looking for me all morning. She asked where I was and came and got me.

Apparently mum had called the police and my whole family was worried. All in all it makes for a good story and I do not regret it one bit.

Next edition I will have a similar type story, where I end up in the lock-up.

MGMT Mania!!!

In June 2008 my mate Kyle and I tried to get tickets to our favourite band MGMT. Knowing how popular they were, we knew our chances of getting tickets through Ticketmaster was going to be tough. It was, they sold out in about 120 seconds, we missed out. We were quite devastated, but knew that there were other ways to go out about it. So the next day we went on EBAY to see there were two tickets on there for $180 each. Without thinking twice we snapped them up. The next day our mates Mitchy and Joey did the same thing. So now it was the count-down till Wednesday December 10 when we get to see MGMT's electro-beats.

The day finally arrived, I went and got Mitchy at about 11:30am, then went to pick up Joey from work. We decided to go to the Dicky Beach Surf Club to have a few pre-drinks while we were waiting for Kyle. It was about 3 o'clock when I got a phone call from him asking if I could go get him from work. I was planning on being down in Brisbane by 4 o'clock so I had plenty of time to drink, since I was driving down. I asked him where he was and he said just past Gympie, which was atleast an hour away. I was really annoyed but had no choice to go get him because he had my ticket, so be-grudgent I hopped in Mario, stopped at the petrol station and put fifty dollars in him then sat on about 130 km/h the whole way there and back. There was not much said on the trip back, Kyle knew how angry I was at him. We flew back and picked up Joey and Mitchy then we were finally on the way to see the band I had been waiting months to see.

We found our way to our mates Blaine's apartment in the city at about 7 o'clock, this was when the first support act Tame Impala started. We scoffed down some beers then jumped in a taxi and arrived at The Tivoli at about 8 o'clock. Luke Steele (from Empire of the Sun) was warming up the crowd for the main act of the night. I took this oppurtunity to down as many vodka raspberries as I could. As it got closer to the end of Steele's set Mitchy and I got as close to the stage as possible. We were right up the front in a really good position.

They came on and it was the best live performance I have seen to this date, there sound was so raw and original. I looked around to see everyone there in awe. The second last song of their set was one of their most well known numbers, 'Electric Feel'. About half way through their song I seen someone out of the corner my jump up on the other side of the stage, it was Kyle, he had eluded one security guard and positioned himself centre stage next to the singer Andrew VanWyngarden, another security guard came on to grab him and he fended him off with an extended arm then another security guard come from the other side and escorted him off stage. This ended up being a blessing in disguise for Kyle as he watched their last song 'Kids' from side stage.

We met back up with Joey and he said that we were a chance to get into the after party as one of his friends were DJ'ing there. So Joey and I went to the Lime Hotel where it was. We explained to security that we knew the DJ, but he didnt grant us access, as we were trying everything we could to get in a white bus rocked up, it was the MGMT bus. About 10 people jumped out including the two band members VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. We went to greet them as they walked towards the door, and had a little chat to them. The all went upstairs besides Goldwasser, he was standing against the wall having a cigarette, I saw this as an oppurtunity to talk to him, so I went up to him and talked to him for about five minutes, then when he went to go upstairs he asked us if we wanted to go up with him, of course we said yes. We walked in behind him giving the security a pretty rye smile. When we got through the door the cue for the elevator was very long, so Goldwasser turned to Joey and I and asked if we wanted to take the stairs. When we got to the top of the third flight we entered the outdoor rooftop party, it was like the party stopped, everyone turned and looked because Goldwasser had arrived. There were only about fifty people there, so it was pretty intimate.

The night went on and he ended up drinking Mahita's off MGMT's tab, smoking a joint with Tame Impala, we also got to meet all of the touring party and they were all great people. This was definetly the best night I have had out and probably the most surreal.

The Long Day But Short Night!

After hearing the news that my football game was cancelled due to wet weather, I thought it was necassary to make the most of one of our only Saturdays off for the next five or so months and decided to invite some of my mates from football around.

Since I had no money, I remembered that mum had slipped me forty dollars earlier in the day to put in my car. So of course on the way to the petrol station I stopped in at the local Liquorland and picked up a cask of crisp dry white wine (a.k.a goon).

I returned home after picking up James with nearly half a tank of fuel, Mario (my car) was quite appreciative since this was the first time in a while this was the case.

I wasn't really sure how many would show up, it could have been fifty or it could of been five. While James and I were waiting for people to arrive we decided to crack open our first beers, it was about 12:30pm.

About half an hour later there was about twelve people over and we were watching the AFL on the television. Flicking from the Collingwood and Melbourne game and the Geelong and Richmond game. Many of us were Collingwood supporters so it was good to see them have their first win of the season.

It was about 5 o'clock when everyone decided to go out, not me, due to my bank balance being in the negative I stayed home with Steve and invited some of our friends from school over. We continued to drink at a fast rate and at about 7 o'clock there was about seven or eight of us here. When Damian arrived he wanted to have a crack at the game that has never been completed called 100 shots in 100 minutes, its generally done with goon. So five of us gave it a crack, downing a full shot out of deceivingly big shot glasses every minute on the minute. This ultimately was my downfall. After about the 40th shot I found myself spewing over the balcony numerous times. My mum had witnessed all this and was not too impressed.

Somehow when I returned to where everyone was sitting my pants were no longer around my waist either was my underwear. Everyone had a laugh when mum said "I haven't seen that thing since he was 4". Her and the other three females that were there were disgusted and rightfully so. Apologies to them. Steve saw this as an oppurtunity to spin one of his famous stories, telling everyone lies about the thing they just seen, but never should have seen.

After I produced a bit more vomit, I was in bed it was about 10:30. Everyone left and went to Mooloolaba.

All in all, it was a pretty good day/night. A few lessons I learnt where when you start drinking at noon dont try 100 shots in 100 minutes 8 hours later, never take your pants off when family is around and always remember when your the host. I would like to thank everyone who came over and everyone who helped me piece together the night so I could write this section of the blog. Hope everyone had fun and the next section I write should be full of interesting times due to the easter long weekend coming up.

Nevereverland

Well it was 7.30am when my phone woke me from my sleep, my very short sleep, three hours to be exact. It was my mate Daniel he rang me up to see when I was picking him up to head to Brisbane for Nevereverland, a music festival. This would be my third in as many months, and I was starting to get a 'mini' addiction.

Dreary eyed and nursing a thumping head-ache, I jumped in Mario (my car) to pick up Daniel who lives about five minutes away. We returned home to hear from my mum that when I got home in the early hours of that morning I was strolling up and down the drive-way in my birthday suit. This was quite embarrassing especially that one of mum's work-mates had stayed the night and witnessed it all.

After I grabbed everything I needed, we were off. We picked up two of our mates, Brod and Mitchy and headed south to Brisbane. We met Kyle, Trent, Matiu and Pete at another one of our mates units where they let us stay for the night. After a few drinks and a few 'fireballs' down the hatch, every one in the other car realised that they left there tickets back at home, about an hour trip one way away. So it left four of us at the unit, half an hour later we were in a taxi and on the way too the Brisbane Riverstage.

We arrived right on time and I was quite suprised to see that I could see plenty of grass and not many people. Van She were on stage and played a really good set to start off what shaped to be a real exciting day. Looking at my mates I realised that they were having the time of there lives where I was quite sober. To fix this I went and bought two drinks and downed another 'smurf'.

One of my most anticipated acts of the day Ladyhawke was on next. We squirmed our way to the front and it was even better then I expected, especially that there was about 10-15 of our mates with us. By this time the crowd had grown to almost capacity and the atmosphere was indescribable.

After cooling our heals a bit by sitting on the hill and taking it all in, it was time for one of my favourite bands Cut Copy, by this time I was on another planet as were about 85% of the festival. Cut Copy absolutely blew me away and put me in a good frame of mind for the rest of the day.

After two suprisingly good sets from Hercules & Love Affair and The Whitest Boy Alive, The Klaxons came on and I found myself rolling around by myself. I quite enjoyed this.

I caught up with Daniel towards the end of there set just in time to see the headline act, The Presets. They are his favourite duo so he talked me in to coming right down the front. We got about 7 or 8 metres from the stage it was perfect positioning. We also ran into my mates who were just in front of us. Half way through there set I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, it was a message from my mate Josh saying 'come to gate at the front of the stage' intrigued I sent back asking why. He replied saying that he could get me backstage to watch the remainder of there set. I quickly weaved through the crowd to meet his friend, she wacked a VIP pass on my shirt and said come with me, she took me up the stairs to where Josh was, I watched about the last five songs from 3 metres away from them. Was probably one of the best experiences I have seen in my short life. She got me backstage because her boyfriends brother-in-law was the tour manger of The Klaxons. Josh also informed me that I was on the list for the after party. So we went our seperate ways and were to meet there.

I met back up with Daniel, Kyle and Mitchy and we then headed back to the unit. After a 45 minute walk and another hour long wait in the taxi line we finally found ourselves back at the unit where the other boys were, all of them barely awake after smoking too many bongs.

I was keen to head out on the town as I was to meet this girl out that I had never met. This ruined my. To be blatantly honest, she was a lot different looking to her photos, not for the better either. So the gentleman I am I decided to hang out with her instead of going out because she ditched her friends to come see me. So after about 3 hours of awkward conversation and a lot of silences I payed $50 for a taxi to get us both home (seperate houses). That money could have been spent on a lot better things let me tell you!

In review, this is the best festival I have been to out of the 10 or so I have attended. The highlights were Ladyhawke, Cut Copy, The Presets, the people I went with. The main lowlight was ditching my friends for a girl with less hair then me.

James' 20th

So after a 68 point win in our first game for points of the season I was on a high travelling back from Caboolture heading to my good mate James' 20th gathering. It was set to be a good night with a beach side setting down at Shelley Beach.

Expecting to be late due to the game I downed a few Hahn Super Dry beers in the car thanks to my good mate Ryan. We were dropped straight too James' house and realised we were pretty much the first ones there. Ryan continued to feed me beers as more of the guests arrived. Before we knew it there was around fifteen of us packed onto the balcony trading Jagermeister shots which certainly got a few of us going.

After we sung happy birthday and sat down for a few more liquid pleasures James's mum delivered the bad news that they had a complaint from a neighbouring unit, so the party had to continue elsewhere. It was a given that it would be Mooloolaba most likely The Wharf.

As I had no money, I thought my night was too end here. But thanks to my fellow un-employed, friend, Steve, he offered to pay my cover charge. So off to The Wharf we went, I stuck with Steve and another one of our mates, Damian. We were too meet the rest of them up there.

When we got there it was around 11pm which meant it wasn't going to be that busy...yet. After we waited around five minutes to get in downstairs we went straight to get our stamp for upstairs.

It wasn't long before the three of us and another one of my mates were on the dance floor. Damian goes alright with the ladies so before we knew it, we were pretty much surrounded by them. Which is pretty unusual for myself.

The night went on and we ran into a few more mates some from James' and some that I knew from other places so there was plenty of us scattered around which worked in well with everyone I think.

As I wasn't drinking while I was there I started to sober up which meant I would'nt last on the dancefloor for much longer. When 2.45am came I found myself outside alone trying to figure out a way home. Eventually I stumbled in my door and slumped on my bed about 4am.

All in all it was probably one of the best nights I have had there. Mostly because I did'nt write my self off which was starting to become a habit and I can actually remember the majority of the night. Also the people that I went out with and met out were just there to enjoy the night without any trouble. And I would also like to say well done to the DJ who killed it.

Happy Birthday James!

The usual night out!

Well it was back to my old stomping ground, Mooloolaba. After not going there in the best part of a month I was quite looking forward to heading up there to which shaped to be a good night as I had my first trial game of footy (aussie rules) that day. So a few of us lived up to the tradition of a few drinks after the game at the pub, which led to a few too many for some of us (especially me).

Me and a mate went back to his and had a few more drinks as we were to meet the rest of them out. We had no real way of getting there so we walked to a bus stop down the road with drinks in hand, this is where my first set-back of the night was, a security car pulled over and out jumped a copper, he got us for drinking in public, $100 fine each. We then got on the bus and proceeded towards our destination.

After the most expensive bus ride in the history of man-kind we went to a bar/club named Vibes where we met up with mates from footy and other just the usual crowd in there. It was pretty fun, had plenty to drink and hit the dance floor and as I was told the next morning I hooked up with an alright chick which is pretty unusual for me as the beer goggles are normally in affect if I am drunk enough to be on the dance floor!

Then it was off to the most popular club on the Sunshine Coast, The Wharf Tavern (formerly known as Fridays). They stung us $10 each too get in and thats just downstairs where the live band plays. They charge you another 10 smackers to get upstairs where the DJ's play. The night wore on as most of it was spent on the dance floor im pretty sure. At about 2.3o I ran into a girl that I was kinda meant to be meeting there, we then left. Ill let your imaganation run wild with how the rest panned out!
